Improve Your Mood with Selenium

A recent study from New Zealand finds that maintaining optimal levels of selenium may improve mood and be associated with a reduced risk of depressive symptoms in young adults aged 17 to 25.

Study authors found that both too low and too high levels of this trace mineral may have a detrimental impact on mood. However, the greatest symptoms of depression were observed for the lowest levels, suggesting that lower levels were more harmful than higher ones.

In young adults, an optimal range of serum selenium between about 82 and 85 micrograms per liter was associated with reduced risk of depression, report study authors.

Selenium can be obtained through a daily multivitamin and is found in foods such as grains, dairy, seafood, poultry, nuts, and eggs.
